Volunteer Services

Volunteers have always been a much-welcomed and appreciated part of Hospis Malaysia. Their contribution in meeting the simple, day-to-day needs of patients adds on to the quality of care provided by Hospis Malaysia on the whole. Volunteers who come under Hospis Malaysia will be provided with on-the-job training and an induction which will give them a clear idea of what Hospis Malaysia does, and what it requires of them. Volunteers can also attend any of the Palliative Care workshops organized by Hospis Malaysia to familiarize themselves with the basic concepts of Palliative Care.
At Hospis Malaysia, volunteers’ contributions are mostly seen at the Day Care Centre which is open every Tuesdays and Thursdays for patients who are mobile. The Day Care Centre provides an opportunity for them to participate in therapeutic activities and discover new interests and friends. Often, what patients simply need is company – someone who would talk to them, or simply be with them. Volunteers at Hospis Malaysia also often take it upon themselves to provide patients with simple manicure and pedicure, qi qong exercises, leg massages, entertainment in the form of songs, dance and games, etc.
Besides attending to patients at the Day Care Centre, volunteers are also needed in the following areas:-
- Preparing meals for Day Care Centre patients every Tuesday and Thursday
- Providing transportation for patients to and from their houses on Tuesdays & Thursdays, and on days when special outings are planned.
- Devising and organizing activities (art, musical, creative) for patients during Day Care days
- Helping out Hospis Malaysia’s public fundraising events such as treasure hunts, fundraising concerts, charity bazaars, exhibitions etc.
- Helping out with basic administrative duties such as filing, typing etc.
At present, we have a pool of approximately 100 volunteers who help out mainly at the Day Care Centre, at our office or during our fundraising events. Most regular volunteers work approximately 7 to 8 hours per day (depending on the nature of their duties) 2 days in a week. By becoming a volunteer at Hospis Malaysia, you will be able to do your part for the society while giving yourself a chance to learn something new (about hospices, Palliative Care) and meet new people.
