How are we Funded?

Hospis Malaysia's service is provided free-of-charge, which leaves us to depend on donations and contributions of the generous public and corporate sector as our main source of funds. Approximately RM 1.8 million is incurred a year in operating expenses - and these include cost of medicine and medical equipment, training & education cost, staff remuneration and general administration cost.

Besides public and corporate pledges and contributions, donations also come from families of patients who insist on doing their part for the cause. These are purely voluntary contributions since Hospis Malaysia does not charge any of its patients.  A yearly grant is also received from the Ministry of Health, Malaysia under its allocation for hospices, but the sum differs from year to year.

In order to ensure a continuous inflow of funds, Hospis Malaysia regularly organizes its own fundraising events. Besides helping to raise funds, such events also provide an outlet for Hospis Malaysia to create awareness of palliative care among the public. Regular events that serve such purposes include the annual Hospis Malaysia's Charity Treasure Hunt, and its biennial Voices for Hospices concerts. Such events are predominantly dependent on Corporate Support. A case to quote would be our Charity Treasure hunts. Among leading organisations which had supported our treasure hunts in the past include HSBC Malaysia, Spansion KL, and the Sunway Group.

All cash donations made to Hospis Malaysia are issued with tax exempt receipts.

Corporate support also sometimes comes in the form of donation of medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators, ripple mattresses, nebulisers, pulse oximeters, etc. which are in high usage among our patients.
